I know I could be accused of a marmite fixation after a previous “….and finally” lamenting its being banned in Denmark. Recently motorists on the M1 had their opportunity to indulge in a road kill style harvesting opportunity linked to it as this article relays:

“It isn’t often that disruption on motorways brings a smile to the faces of the general public. But spillage of 20-tonnes of Marmite onto the M1 in South Yorkshirelast night has prompted many jokes about the yeasty spread miraculously turning into jam.”

I like a drop of the black stuff myself – whether Guinness or Marmite – but I am afraid it is falling off the list of interesting options in Denmark.

As this article explains, “the strongly flavoured dark brown spread made from brewer’s yeast has joined Rice Crispies, Shreddies, Horlicks and Ovaltine prohibited in Denmark under legislation forbidding the sale of food products with added vitamins as threat to public health.

“Many well known breakfast cereal and drink brands have already been banned or taken off supermarket shelves after Danish legislation in 2004 restricted foods fortified with extra vitamins or minerals.”

Let’s hope we don’t get into a trade war – we might find Hans Christian Andersen being removed the shelves of our online booksellers and Carlsberg becoming a “drink of the past”!!
