Archaeologists in Turkey have made a discovery which could settle a century-old debate … and disappoint millions of children around the world.

They have unearthed what they say is likely the tomb of the original Santa Claus, or Saint Nicholas, beneath an ancient church in Demre, southern Turkey.

Demre, previously known as Myra, in Antalya province, is believed to be the birthplace of the 4th century bishop.

Cemil Karabayram, the head of Antalya’s Monument Authority, said the shrine was discovered during electronic surveys that showed gaps beneath the church.

Sleigh down…! Santas sprint for the RNLI https://hinterland.org.uk/sleigh-down-santas-sprint-for-the-rnli/ Wed, 19 Dec 2012 08:55:06 +0000 http://www.hinterland.org.uk/?p=1660 Why do people do things like this. They spoil access to my office on the last Sunday before Christmas – better surely to just give the cash to a good cause without making everyone feel sick at the prospect of yet more festive revelry in santa suits! Still they do raise some very useful funds and I have early onset christmasitis – bah humbug! The article itself tells us:

Running in support of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, 2,000 people dressed as Father Christmas sprinted along the promenade at Southsea, Hampshire, in the winter sunshine yesterday.

Each entrant received a free Father Christmas suit and a Santa medal , but sadly, no trips to Lapland were on offer.
