Brian May
has said Queen will not play Glastonbury next year after clashing with the festival’s founder over the controversial badger cull.

The 72-year-old guitarist and animal rights campaigner rubbished claims that his band had been booked to headline Glastonbury’s 50th anniversary event next year.

Founder Michael Eavis, 84, who is also a dairy farmer, has called May a “danger to farming” and criticised him for his opposition to the badger cull, which is aimed at preventing the spread of bovine TB.

Last year, Eavis’s support for the cull prompted the Downton Abbey actor Peter Egan to call on music fans to boycott Glastonbury.

Speaking on BBC Radio 2 on Friday, May said Queen, who are touring with American Idol’s Adam Lambert providing the vocals, would not perform at Glastonbury in 2020 unless “things changed radically”.

Glastonbury festival to move from Worthy Farm in 2019, says founder https://hinterland.org.uk/glastonbury-festival-to-move-from-worthy-farm-in-2019-says-founder/ Wed, 21 Dec 2016 10:38:46 +0000 http://www.hinterland.org.uk/?p=4220 In the Hinterland sent out during the shortest daylight week of the year – here is a story from the region of Stonehenge and Glastonbury to reflect on how everything needs to be done in moderation! It tells us:

The Glastonbury festival will be moved from its home at Worthy Farm in 2019 to protect the site, under plans outlined by its founder, Michael Eavis. He said the move to a site about 100 miles away was likely to take place every five years.

Eavis revealed that he had identified a site in the Midlands, though he did not specify where it was. “I am arranging for one year off, say every fifth year or so, to try and move the show to a site that’s more suitable, I have to say. But it would be a huge loss to Somerset if it went there forever, would it not?” he said.

Eavis, who started hosting the festival at Worthy Farm in 1970, told the BBC: “We’ve got a wonderful product, what we do, and we can do it almost anywhere. I love my own farm … I might have to move it eventually.

“Most people are on side now and it’s a wonderful, wonderful boost for the whole of Somerset and beyond as well.” He insisted the move away from the county would not be permanent, saying: “I don’t want to lose it for ever, no way.”

The festival has a regular fallow year to give local people – and the land itself – a rest from the annual disruption. The next fallow year is due in 2018.

Rolling Stones to headline Glastonbury 2013 https://hinterland.org.uk/rolling-stones-to-headline-glastonbury-2013/ Wed, 27 Mar 2013 20:46:45 +0000 http://www.hinterland.org.uk/?p=1851 Every year when the Glastonbury line up is  announced I can feel my hands itching with this irrepresible need to evaluate the impact of the iconic event on  the Somerset economy.  This year its the Stones making me wistful for some evaluation action. I really do think we need to understand better how iconic rural activities like this contribute to the broader economy. The article itself tells us:

The Rolling Stones are the latest in a series of “heritage” acts who have headlined festivals in recent years. U2 headlined Glastonbury in 2012, Stevie Wonder took the Sunday slot in 2010 and in 2009 Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen headlined on Friday and Saturday.

Glastonbury will take place between Wednesday June 26 and Sunday June 30. Tickets for the festival, which had a year off in 2011, sold out last October.

…and dont they look great in their wizened grandeur  – they seem to have the hues of old mellow cigars in the photos that accompany the article.
