Beavers can stay in Devon, rules Natural England
A heart warming story in and finally… beavers after 500 years are back, ironically living on the River Otter. Adult males can grow up to 3-4 stone and they are the second largest rodents in the world. I remember Mr and Mrs Beaver as real heroes in “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.” This story tells us:
Beavers which were discovered living on the River Otter in Devon will be allowed to stay, it was announced today.
The creatures were captured on film last February in what was believed to be the first sighting in the English Countryside in 500 years.
Natural England has been considering an application for them to be allowed to live in the wild and today issued a licence for their re-introduction.
The move is a victory for locals and campaigners such as the Devon Wildlife Trust, who will manage the re-introduction programme.
Harry Barton, Chief Executive of Devon Wildlife Trust, said: “We are delighted by Natural England’s decision to grant us a licence to give these beavers a long term future on the River Otter.
