Britain at risk of gas and electricity ‘squeeze’ by 2015
This article tells us
“Alistair Buchanan, chief executive of the UK’s energy regulator, said “tightness” in electricity supply could come at the same time as a “squeeze” on gas by the middle of this decade.
His remarks suggest household are heading for higher energy costs, even though they are already paying near-record gas and electricity bills of £1310 per year. Speaking at a conference in Amsterdam, the energy chief admitted a squeeze on gas and electricity supply could cause “a very interesting issue on price”.
Energy bills are unpredictable because gas prices can be affected by anything from unrest in the Middle East to maintenance work on platforms in the North Sea.”
It seems to me that now any old excuse to push up energy prices will do, we have become so accustomed to being pushed around by energy companies. This is particularly bad in terms of the high dependence of vulnerable people on expensive sources of fuel in rural England.
I was watching the really interesting BBC 2 Programme on the 70s on Monday evening and feel at the reading of this latest bad energy news a sentimental yen for the bad/good old days of nationalised energy suppliers.
