Mile-long fly-tipping site could cost taxpayers £1 million to clean up
Fly tipping is a big issue for rural authorities. I feel suspicious about this story, dumping on this scale doesn’t happen over night and it seems some people are far too keen to blame travellers for everything that happens in this context. Have a look at this article and see what you think – for me it puts the whole issue of the retreat from free waste disposal and its consequences in rural areas (for that matter all areas) into the spotlight.
Taxpayers could face a £1 million clean-up bill after a mile-long fly-tipping site being blamed on “illegal travellers” that appeared “overnight” in Essex.
Discarded sofas, wooden pallets and industrial waste have engulfed a stretch of council-owned land opposite Purfleet railway station in Thurrock, Essex.
It takes 20 minutes to walk the full length of the fly-tipped site and locals have been told clean-up costs for the waste could reach £1 million.
Environment Agency officials have been called into assess if the mountain of debris contains toxic waste including deadly asbestos before any removal work can begin.
Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price laid the blame for fly-tipping on illegal travellers before slamming delays in the clean-up process.
