UK drivers spend £8 billion on parking
I have previously run stories on the impact of car parking on the sustainability of rural service centres. I have also drawn attention to the fact that local authorities are not meant to use car parking revenue to underpin other expenditure. Clearly many still are as this article reveals. Whilst they continue to indulge in this temptation hard pressed rural retailers will continue to face a double whammy in terms of their viability.
British motorists now spend £8 billion each year on parking after charges have risen 12.5 per cent in the last year.
Expensive parking is also hitting local shops and amenities as well as drivers’ wallets, with 65 per cent of respondents to a survey saying that the high cost of leaving their car puts them off shopping locally and 69 per cent simply avoid areas with the highest charges.
According the survey by confused.com, 78 per cent of British drivers spend up to £150 on parking each month.
