Prayers should be private and away from council chambers, High Court to hear in test case
This story recounts how the National Secular Society (NSS) is acting on a complaint from a Bideford Councillor Clive Bone, a non-believer who says he is ”disadvantaged and embarrassed” when Christian prayers are said as part of the council meeting agenda.
The case is being heard at the High Court on Friday, with the NSS arguing that the religious ritual is ”inappropriate” in what should be ”a secular environment concerned with civic business”.
A survey of local authorities showed that the majority of them include prayers as part of the council meeting agenda.
