Blue Tits

As regular Hinterland readers will be aware I have a certain positive fascination with Glastonbury. I also found this story interesting because it is at this time of year that our swallow visitors come to raise their young in the eaves of the stable of our wonderful blind Dales Pony Bobbie. It just surprises me that no one has thought that the birds at the heart of this story might just have showed up to listen to the bands! It tells us

The erection of a steel tower which stands at the head of one of the music areas at the Glastonbury Festival has been delayed after wild birds were discovered in the structure.

The tower was built in 2004 by apprentices at the Appledore shipyard in Devon and has graced the entrance to the Left Field area of the festival ever since.

When a group of volunteers arrived at the festival site on Thursday to erect the tower in readiness for the event later this month they found a nest of blue tits in one of the tower legs.

GMB union official Gary Cook said he hoped the young birds would fly in the next few days so the tower could be put in place.

It has become a familiar site in the Left Field, where political debates are held as well as musical performances.

Spencer Barnshaw , from the Battersea and Wandsworth TUC which owns the tower, said: “We were surprised to hear today about this birds nest with the young blue tits.

“We hope some arrangements can be made so that erecting the 90 foot Left Field tower and beacon does not go tits up.”
