Mumpreneur leads Collins English Dictionary entries

Although my Mum was one I had never come across the term “Mumpreneur” until I read this article – It explains the latest edition of the Collins Dictionary includes:

“Descriptions of modern lifestyle are reflected in terms such as “mumpreneur”, a woman who combines running a business with looking after her children, and “alarm clock Briton”, a worker on a moderate income whose daily routine involves preparing children for school and going out to work. “

Whilst this story is lighthearted in tone I am convinced that language reflects social norms. We have known for many years that people get by in rural communities with limited job opportunities by exhibiting entrepreneurial behaviour and generating one reasonable income by developing a portfolio of smaller jobs which add up to one wage.

The passing of this term into formal recognition also recognises the importance to the rural economy of many women who like my mum have previously helped to support rural families by doing just that. Lets hope if the term catches on it will direct people towards the ongoing importance of many entrepreneurial mums in sustaining viable rural families through their labour and ingenuity
