Revealed: The parts of the country still most reliant on state-funded jobs despite cuts in public spending,

This article includes a map and is based upon figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which show while total public sector employment  (a key indicator of economic vulerability and detailed more fully in the email we have just sent ot RSN ED Officers as part of our profiling service) is estimated to have risen in all regions during 2008 and 2009 it had fallen to below 2008 levels by September 2012.

Apparently, fewer than one in five people now work in the public sector, with the ONS suggesting every part of the UK is becoming less reliant on state jobs. Although the proportion of people employed in the state sector varies across the country, with Northern Ireland having the highest percentage of workers employed in the public sector (27.7%), followed by Scotland (23.5%) and North East England (22.2%) – unsurprisingly, this compares to just 16.6% in South East England.
