Home broadband speeds ‘up 20pc’, says Ofcom
Things are going faster – but not necessarily in rural areas. This article tells us:
“Britons now enjoy an average broadband speed of 9 Megabits-per-second, an 18 per cent increase on the average of 7.6Mbps in November 2011, when Ofcom last surveyed the market.
When Ofcom began monitoring broadband speeds, in late 2008, the average was 3.6Mbps.
Ofcom found that in May 2012 68 per cent of British home broadband users had services promising speeds of up to 10Mbps. In May 2011, fewer than half (48 per cent) of people were using services that delivered those speeds. Eight per cent of home broadband connections were ‘super-fast’, Ofcom said.
The arrival of ‘super-fast’ broadband services, such as BT Infinity and Virgin’s high speed service, has also boosted the average, Ofcom says”
It goes on to report however that (and most are in rural areas) – “The Government has committed to speeds of at least 2Mbps for the entire country by 2015, promising the best broadband network in Europe. Ofcom found that 10 per cent of Britons had broadband speeds of less than 2Mbps.”
